Most people I know who talk about common sense are those most likely to believe in what we used to call "old wives tales". I find myself frequently explaining to them that what they consider to be obvious or common sense is actually not true.

Wearing a mask in a pandemic is common sense.
But many won't.

So there's some people with no damn common sense.

Social norms, common practice, these are all ways people tend to make choices. And they construct reasons upon why those choices are "correct". They share these reasons and they become "truth".

Common sense to many uneducated and unthinking people consists of lies, unfounded conspiracy theories and bigotry

An "old wives tale" is folklore which may or may not have a basis in reality. The rest are deliberately false and malicious propaganda.

corporate-owned media has been pushing the idiotic conspiracy theory that the uneducated and the incompetent are actually smarter than all these "elitists" with their "liberal" educations and experience and "fuzzy-thinking" intelligence, who "oppress" them.
