So far, so good.
Being a Historical Costumer and Minored in History in College, the attention to detail has been nothing short of stellar. Having been to Gettysburg, Manasas, Richmond, Chancelorsville, and other important Civil War monuments and battlefields, seeing this series rings home.
Do not miss this 3 night event.

(6,474 posts)I'm enjoying it though. I dislike this type of play acting with episodic invented monologue. If you are going to make it a drama make it a movie like say John Adams on HBO

(16,783 posts)I am a History buff to this day, though I Minored In it in College.
Going to the places where history took place, like at Gettysburg where Lincoln gave his famed address, Appomattox where the surrender between Lee and Grant was signed, makes interest in history al the more enjoyable. It also Makes one want to read more too.

Btw, there's a lot of history podcasts these days. History Hit is a recent favorite because it's not all British history just about every episode. He covers a wide range.

(16,783 posts)Picket's charge proved deadly for the Confederacy and turned the tide in favor of Grant and the Union. The dead could be smelt from 5 miles away.
To this day, artifacts continue to be dug up. The Cemetery at Gettysburg has a monument that marks the spot where Lincoln gave his 2 minute address. The acres of grave markers remind us of this major event. Gettysburg was fought to preserve the Union as well as protect Washington, D.C from Lee.
Arlington National Cemetery was the plantation home of Robert E. Lee and his wife, who was the Granddaughter of Martha Washington. I have toured that mansion that was used as a temperary field hospital. I have also been to the McLean farm house in Appomattox where Lee surrendered to Grant.

(25,183 posts)With all of the repetition of scenes, and many extended commercial breaks, there's probably not much more than an hour's worth of footage in a two hour show. But, at least it got me watching History Channel again.
I can't imagine what genius thought "Pawn Stars" was a good fit for that network.

(12,863 posts)I've read extensively on the Civil War, and I'm very familiar with Grant's life prior to yhe presidency.
Glad to see this it doesn't have the typical characterization of Grant as a gruff extrovert. He was in fact fairly reserved and gentlemanly.

(28,246 posts)He was better looking than most movie stars---that's the first time I'd seen Lee, other than as an older man, with a gray beard, and unfortunately, in a Confederate uniform. What a profound pity he chose loyalty to Virginia and the South, rather than commanding Union forces.
I'll be watching the second part of the Grant series tonight. It's very worthwhile.
