Wait -- What's That?

You republicans are saying, yes, Trump and his administrayion did it, but you can't convict him because he thought his being re-elected was in the national interest, and he didn't harm national security. This is the same administration now threatening to prevent the Bolton book from telling exactly what went on, because that is a threat to national security?

Two days ago, I wrote an essay about the state of mind we need to be in to approach November. Of course I went back to the well, and got talking about when I used to get in the ring to fight. I was doing my best to come across as an advocate for non-violence in body & mind. But then I recognized that I sounded angry. Very, very angry. Yikes! I didn't want to go there, much less post anything like that for the Good People on this forum!

You are not alone -- a LOT of people I've spoken with in the past 72 hours are. I understand exactly why. In fact, I had started a longer essay about just that -- and how we deal with it, and use it to our advantage -- yesterday. But then my dogs got into a scrap over some little thing -- they are brothers, who sometimes remind me of my sons as young teens -- and I came out much worse than either of them. So hopefully I'll have the ability to write one up today.

In the mean time, we will crush them in November. I would not say that if it were not true.

Bolton needs to consider his potential audience -- both those demanding that he speak now, and potential buyers of his book. Clearly, the Trump cult isn't found in either group. And the overlap between the groups will evaporate if he doesn't speak up very soon.

The craven GOPers in the Senate have just crowned the first American king. That he is a corrupt, insane, racist is no matter to them. Trump is their Emperor/God, and they just flushed the Constitution down the toilet because they want more tax cuts and Supreme Court picks, and are afraid of that fuckstick and his followers.

I am always reminded of Erich Fromm's 1973 book on "The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness." A large part of it focuses upon what types of personalities are required for a character such as Hitler to rise to power in a society. We are witnessing that today.

I understand that senators can, even if a president has committed serious offenses, vote "not guilty." But this requires several things: the president must admit that they have done wrong, promise not to repeat the ill-behavior, and be near the end of their presidency. None of these markers is satisfied here -- just the opposite.

In over 300 boxing matches, I can honestly say that I never fouled or used dirty tactics unless the other guy did, and the referee didn't say a word. If it reached that point, I knew that anything goes. And in each and every instance, the opponent did not survive to hear the last bell.

I’m very impressed. I have had a fair number of the famous Philly boxers as patients over the years: amazing stories from them. I know it’s horriftingly primitive but it “gets you” on a deep level.

My dad and I used to watch the Friday night fights together and I used to vicariously enjoy the action since I was a really small kid with little upper body strength and pencil arms. I considered myself a student of the sport into and beyond my college years but stopped watching all classes during the Tyson era for whatever reason.

I remember going to see the great film Rocky here in Philly when it was first out and my friends with whom I went didn’t understand why I was laughing at the fight scenes, which were great theatrics but “unrealistic” does not begin to describe the outcome after even one of those combinations that Apollo Creed landed in the first round.

As an aside, I happened to be sitting next to Phillys most famous pitchman, Gene Crane, in a restaurNt when he accepted the role as Philly’s mayor for Rocky III. It was at The dearly departed Arthur’s Steak House on Walnut Street.

As a teen, I was featured in boxing magazines. I fought a total of 329 times. Lost 9 of those, but beat each of the guys that would give me a re-match. One guy beat me twice, but that was out of nine fights.

Now days, I still train a couple guys for the NYS Golden Gloves (all of the state above NYC, which has their own GG.) This year, it's down to one, my younger son. Philly's son Marvis Frazier used to help me train him. (Another old Philly friend was Eugene "Cyclone" Hart, who you may remember. Tough man. His son fights these days.)

It's a strange thing .... as I was watching the impeachment trial, I found myself experiencing the same mental processes that I did when I sized an opponent up.

Golden Gloves champion of Trenton, Ivy Mingo. He’s deceased now, but one guy in my school pulled a knife on him because he thought Mingo was staring at his gf. Ivy said, “just put it away.” The guy swiped st him and Ivy punched him once: a short jab to his chin. The guy was out before he hit the ground. Didn’t move. We thought he was dead.
I will say that the punch happened so fast that if I hadn’t been staring intently, I’d have missed it.
Ivy got thrown out of school for threatening to kill the headmaster and rape his wife. Six PA State Police picked him up carrying two shotguns in addition to their sidearms. We were scared out of our wits. We never saw him again.

When we were young, one of my brothers & my friends died in the ring. I remember thinking, "Wow! Poor Frank!," but not being smart enough to recognize how dangerous the sport is. And, as you know, it's not just that people die. Getting punched over and over, in training or in fights, isn't good.

A few years after my brother retired, we all noticed serious changes in his behavior. He had taken a lot of punches to the forehead, which causes a distinct set of symptoms. He became hostile, paranoid, and threatening. Then the substance abuse started, which made everything far worse. He would inhabit county jail and mental institutions frequently. These days, he's in a wheelchair, and talks non-stop about UFOs and aliens.

In a sense, my brother's style was more Frazier, and mine Ali. I took more blows to the back of the head, and now deal with the long-term effects of that. One of my cousins, James, taught at Temple's neurological studies until his death in 2007. We used to talk about the long-term damage that getting hit causes.

I try to talk the two of my children who box out of it. They are both aware of their uncle's and my boxing-related issues. Since they insist, I just try to have them as well prepared as possible.

This conversation has me thinking of how every generation of my family, since my grandfather came here from Ireland, has produced boxers. My 105 lb daughter in Boston messaged me this morning, to say she has a bout in two weeks. Law office by day, musician on weekends, and boxer evenings. She is the most gentle person I've ever met. Yet she's used a picture of me training for the cover of her first CD. Yikes!
