General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsNetflix has a lot of new documentaries on Hitler
All aspects of Hitler and WWII are covered, from multiple documentaries on the evolution of the concentration camps into death camps, the systematic murder of entire Jewish communities and villages during the invasion of Russia, code named Operation Barbarossa, which is also dealt with in various documentaries. There are some on the specific weapons of war like the Panzer tanks, the Schaefer Gustav cannon which was the largest-calibre rifled weapon ever used in combat and, in terms of overall weight, the heaviest mobile artillery piece ever built. It fired the heaviest shells of any artillery piece. Also there are multiple documentaries of Hitlers rise to power and on all his Nazi generals and officers who implemented the genocide. There are documentaries of interviews with Holocaust survivors.
I have been watching many of them because I want to know what really happened. Because its important to know the facts of the rise of the Third Reich. Because it seems to be taking a foothold in our own country. We must never let this happen. Never.

(11,856 posts)the comparison to what's happening right before our eyes in America today is chilling. The only difference being that Hitler was a lot smarter than Trump.

(53,410 posts)Trump could easily be sidelined into a figurehead by people who are far smarter than he is.

(53,410 posts)so they can see for themselves. There is too much ignorance of Hitler and how he rose to power and how he was able to do what he did. Most people only have a vague idea of what happened.

(13,912 posts)I believe its called Auschwitz: Nazis and the Final Solution. It really delves in to all aspects of the death camps and how they started, etc.
lunatica
(53,410 posts)Very few people know that Auschwitz was not a death camp at first. So seeing it in our border concentration camps is not as crazy as it seems.

(54,302 posts)The German government wants the population to never forget what happened, why it happened, and for the people to understand it must never happen again, especially here.
My father-in-law, who was taken off his farm at age 17 to be cannon fodder at Stalingrad, was always silent about his war experiences (he got a leg blown off in -40° temperatures, and returned home a cripple at age 18). But whenever an image of Hitler appeared on TV, his face would grow stony and his jaw would ripple in anger. There is a building across the street from us that the Gestapo used during the war. It is now the Anne Frank Elementary School, and both my daughters went there. Never forget.

They should be required viewing starting in high school.

(53,410 posts)and how they dealt with the invaders demands to hand over their Jewish population. Some towns and cities in Southern France came to an agreement that they would give the Germans any Jews who were not French citizens. In Norway they absolutely refused to hand a single Jew over and they smuggled Jews into Sweden which wasnt at war. The US refused to take Jewish refugees and even sent them back to Europe.
It was shameful.

(1,769 posts)I have also been reading about the reemergence of the Mussolini family, who seem to still be very right wing. Also the descendants of the Bourbon royalty, who ruled just prior to the French revolution.
It seems the descendants and followers of these regimes have been in the shadows waiting to once again take over. How many nazis came to the americas? Too many. I sound like a conspiracy theorist when I talk about all of them, but it is frightening.
I hope the youth of today are watching these documentaries. The passion of the hate of the right wing is alarming.

(41,103 posts)titled "ANNE FRANK REMEMBERED" (1995). A British BBC production narrated by Kenneth Branagh and Glenn Close, the film won an Oscar Award in the best documentary category in 1996. This month Anne would have been 90 years old. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Frank_Remembered
The film covers Anne's life with touching recollections by those who knew her in Amsterdam and the Polish concentration camps where she and her mother and sisters were sent in 1944, Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. The film includes clips of Anne's father, Otto Frank speaking tenderly of her and her diary in interviews filmed in the post-war period. Otto was the only person to survive in Anne's immediate family.
This in depth documentary I can't rate highly enough. After searching I found a trailer for it on YouTube, but not the entire 1-hour film. (*I did see other films named similarly- 'Remembering Anne Frank,' but not the exact one I'm searching for).
> If it's available on Netflix that would be great; I don't have an account with them to check.
Trailer for "Anne Frank Remembered." (1995).
