in New Mexico. Its an open seat in the House. I saw it yesterday on MSNBC. She wants to make New Mexico the state for renewable energy. We have a lot of sunlight and a lot of wind in New Mexico, and plenty of wide open desert. That got my attention since I happen to think climate change is our most important issue.

Right now my Congressman is Ben Luján but hes running for the Senate in the next election, which means shell be my Congresswoman!
She will be great and New Mexico is getting serious about renewable energy, her timing is perfect

(10,667 posts)Valerie Elise Plame Wilson (née Plame, August 13, 1963), known as Valerie Plame, Valerie E. Wilson, and Valerie Plame Wilson, is a writer, spy novelist, and former operations officer who worked at the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). As the subject of the 2003 Plame affair, also known as the CIA leak scandal, Plame's identity as covert officer of the CIA was leaked to and subsequently published by Robert Novak of the Washington Post.
In the aftermath of the scandal, Richard Armitage in the U.S. Department of State was identified as one source of the information, and I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Chief of Staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was convicted of lying to investigators. After a failed appeal, President George W. Bush commuted Libby's sentence and in 2018, President Donald Trump pardoned him. No one was formally charged with leaking the information.
In collaboration with a ghostwriter, Plame wrote a memoir detailing her career and the events leading up to her resignation from the CIA. She has subsequently written and published at least two spy novels. A 2010 biographical feature film, Fair Game, was produced based on memoirs by her and her husband.
In May 2019, Plame announced her intention to run for the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat for New Mexico's 3rd congressional district.[1]

(53,410 posts)They were determined to go to war and made things up. They said Iraq was buying yellow cake from Niger. Valero Plames husband, Joe Wilson, who had been Ambassador there went and found out it wasnt true. He published the story That it wasnt true and that pissed Cheney off. Cheney then outed Wilsons wife. She was working in secret to keep track of nuclear weapons Russia was selling in the Middle East after the US/USSR made a pact to cut back on Nuclear Weapons.

PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,746 posts)And you're right, neither one made a big splash of it.
The local paper doesn't print divorce notices, and they simply weren't at all public about their split. I've lived in cities where divorces were published in the local paper, and that was always entertaining reading.

(25,746 posts)I live in that district, and as much as I like Ms. Plame, there is, in my opinion, an even better but not as well known candidate for that seat. It's Teresa Leger Fernandez, who has lived her entire life in Northern New Mexico. She's an attorney who focusses on social justice issues. Unfortunately, she's almost invisible at this point.
I am not a fan of Ben Ray Lujan. I believe the only other person who has declared for that Senate seat is Maggie Toulouse Oliver, who has her own flaws, but I'll vote for her in the primary if no one I like better shows up.

(10,119 posts)Has she any supporters in the Hispanic community? It's a big heavily Hispanic district.
I'm ok with Ben Ray but I do like Maggie a lot. But our primary is still a year away. A lot can happen.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,746 posts)And it's nearly a year too soon to have any real clue. The primary won't be until June of next year.
The only reason I'm aware of the various candidates is because I both pay careful attention to these things and I subscribe to the Santa Fe New Mexican, the local newspaper. One of my friends here mocks me for getting it, but then I'm very aware of local things he hasn't a clue about.

(10,119 posts)of any paper in the state. Otherwise the Albuquerque outlets dominate the media and are very skimpy about covering the rest of the state. Also check out Joe Monahan's blog for breaking political stories.

(25,746 posts)I wasn't familiar with that blog.
I like the New Mexican. Heck, if the only thing I got from the paper was the crossword puzzle and the funnies I'd consider it worthwhile. One of the things I like best is how on Tuesdays there's always an article about some local restaurant or distillery or some such. Yesterday's was about a local grocery store that stocks things from Central and South America, and how it's planning on building a much larger store on Airport Road, pretty near where I live. The kind of thing that makes this a real community.

(2,937 posts)I'm originally from NM, and I may end up there in retirement. It seems that renewable/future energy is a good fit for NM as a prime focus.
You have finance in NY, oil in TX, entertainment/agriculture/technology in CA, gambling in NV...many states have their themes and principle characteristic industries. Renewable energy sounds like something that both NM and AZ should gang up on and dominate.

(54,050 posts)I have known Valerie for well over ten years, and she is articulate, VERY smart, and completely sincere about wanting to serve the country again. I'm sure her idealism, already battered by what she went through from the Cheney White House, will suffer a few new blows. I am also confident that she is strong enough to handle the new ones. I was in touch with her before she had even made the final decision to run, and encouraged her to go for it (I'm presumably not alone there). She will make NM proud!

and instead of keeping the solar energy for NM, they are shipping most of it out of state. The big problem is we don't have the infrastructure to ship so much solar out of state and there are huge land fights - because no one wants 150 ft. towers on their land. I know because I have small towers (90 ft) going through my land from a windmill farm in NM to bring solar to Arizona. So, my land is devalued and my view is fucked for a company to make money sending energy out of state. The infrastructure fights between landowners and corporations has been going on bigly over here. We have a community organization _ Resistiendo _ to fight all this stuff. We just got another big wind farm company out of our town, but the next town over is now fighting them.
What we want is solar for NM - not huge companies making huge bucks and ruining the landscape and views to make money.
lunatica
(53,410 posts)It makes zero sense to be doing the solar farms but not benefitting from them and another state gets that benefit. If theyre here then the first to benefit should be us. Then do it for others. Renewable energy is needed everywhere, not just over there, wherever there is.
