E. J. Dionne points out that Trump has no control over the purse strings, and that severely limits his power to negotiate anything with the Democratic House.
"From the moment Trump, Pelosi and Schumer announced their convergence on a $2 trillion infrastructure plan last month, Mulvaney began sabotaging it. Is it difficult to pass any infrastructure bill in this environment, let alone a $2 trillion one, in this environment? Absolutely, Mulvaney said.
He was far from alone because the entire Republican leadership in Congress is now part of the Knuckledraggers Caucus. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell quickly signaled that he had absolutely no interest in a big infrastructure plan if it required rolling back any part of the GOPs 2017 corporate tax cut.
Democrats argue that because business is clamoring for infrastructure, it would make sense to ask business to foot part of the bill. They have suggested raising the corporate tax rate to 25 percent from the 21 percent enshrined in the 2017 law and pulling back on some of its other provisions.
No way, say the Republicans. A nonstarter, declared McConnell. Faced with the choice of bridges collapsing in a heap or reining in the tax giveaways, the bridges dont have much of a chance.
Note that the meeting Trump sabotaged was about how to finance the plan. He had no way of coming up with anything constructive because, for all of his bravado, he is totally under the thumb of Congresss conservative ideologues. His tantrum was part of the coverup no one is talking about: The emperor has no money."

(3,646 posts)And it's wonderful to see the term "Knuckledraggers Caucus" in a Washington Post article.

(14,559 posts)When we take power again in 2020, we'll be repealing the giant 2017 tax cut for billionaires and corporations and adjusting the tax code so those who can pay more.

(4,341 posts)Because his role is not to come up with ideas, he has none, his role is to be what he does so well, be a decoy, make a lot of noise to turn the attention to him and miss what the crooks in the background are doing to the country.
I don't understand why we continue to give so much energy to the creature if we are missing the real problem which is the rest of the GOP. Someone needs to to start pointing out the actions of all these people.
We don't hear too much about Pence, or Miller, maybe a little more from McConnell and Graham, but people don't hear about the real problem behind the scenes, they are the real problem, the buffoon is just there to distract, to turn our heads and our attention to the superfluous (tweets) while Miller cooks up Nazi-type policies like the ones that have separated families and caged children, and because we are distracted, we only find out about it when it happens.

(22,768 posts)I agree with those who suggest the House should pass a bill and call Republicans to account for failing two pass it in the Senate. Democrats should pass every bill they want to because it will increase public pressure on Republican Senators. Right now their narrative is that Democrats are too busy with investigation to pass legislation.

(8,908 posts)Let the people decide between us and our plan or the Republicans and no plan. McConnell can only block it as long as he stays in office as the majority leader.
