I was suspended from a right-leaning forum last night because when Hyde-Smith won I said "Congratulations, Mississippi. Your Jim Crow lynching image continues."

(101,730 posts)2. Why would it be? It is clear that modern day Jim Crow efforts to deprive POC from voting both exist
and are increasing.

Down there in Mississippi. People are not born to hate, they are taught to hate. You were exercising your 1st Amendment right to free speech they did not want to hear.
54 years ago, 3 Civil Rights workers were murdered by the KKK because they were working on the behalf of African-Americans still living with the fear of being free Americans with full voting rights. Americans subjected to living in fear because of the color of their skin.
With the win of Cindy Hyde-Smith, the racism of those years are still alive and well. She will surely strive to revive the Jim Crow era with her absolute support of Trump. . Democrats in the South still have a lot of work to do.

(1,871 posts)4. My family migrated from the "south" many years ago
I'm really glad we did. It provided opportunities for at least two generations that
we would not have had otherwise. In the years since, I've often passed through the south ... LA, MS, AL, TN..- and
all I can say is WOW. Outside of some moderately liberal cities, (I love New Orleans) the vast majority of white folks
live in a bubble - a scary scary bubble.
Sadly many people of color in those regions feel so disempowered after years of racism, they've become very
cynical - and don't bother to vote.
