Nine centrist House Democrats are throwing another hurdle in the path of top party leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) as she sprints toward the speaker’s gavel.

It’s not an unexpected obstacle: The nine are members of the Problem Solvers Caucus, a group formed to promote bipartisanship whose members agreed in September to condition their votes for any speaker candidate on support for a package of rules changes meant to improve how the House operates.

In a letter sent to Pelosi on Tuesday, the nine Democrats reiterated that their speaker votes are on the line and asked for a “written, public commitment” to their proposals by Friday.

With a boost from Chicago-area mega donors, including White Sox and Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, No Labels, a group advocating bipartisanship in Congress, has created a network of super PACs to influence the 2018 elections — but doesn’t want its fingerprints on the money.

One of the super PACs, United for Progress Inc., has spent $740,334 as of Sunday to bolster Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., in his March 20 Illinois Democratic primary battle with Marie Newman in the 3rd Congressional District. The names of the super PACS don’t link them to No Labels. A Sun-Times investigation determined super PACS related to No Labels include: United for Progress Inc.; Citizens for a Strong America Inc.; United Together; Govern or Go Home; and Forward, Not Back.

The Sun-Times inquiry included interviews with donors or their representatives and an examination of documents filed with the Federal Election Commission. United for Progress, Inc., is playing political hardball, attacking Newman in the commercials and direct mail pieces it paid for. I've seen too many of them calling her a corporate shill and sellout, etc.

I think most of it is really being egged on by the Republicans and the Russians ... because they want to see the Democrats in turmoil and not unified. And as usual, these same people are being tools for them. They were in 2016, they're doing it now and they'll probably continue to do it in 2020. It's an uphill battle.

trying to tie Dem candidates to the "liberal Pelosi". The Dem candidates' opposition was merely a campaign self-preservation move. And Pelosi was ok with that.

I called my new congressman-elect's office and let them know I voted for him and if decides not to vote for Pelosi, he might not get my vote again in 2 years. I seriously do doubt that anyone who voted for a Dem house candidate did so because of a candidates' commitment not to support Pelosi.

Obviously Dems need a transition plan with a younger crowd. The leadership can't all be in their late 70s. From a Pennsylvania perspective, I wouldn't mind seeing Dwight Evan brought into the leadership circle. Evans was the top Dem on the state house appropriations committee and plenty of state legislative leadership experience. There's a couple of more Bob Casey type reps like Mike Doyle and Brendan Boyle, too.

The Only Credible Challenger to Nancy Pelosi's Speakership Just Endorsed Nancy Pelosi

The inclusion of Linda Sanchez on that list should have been the first clue that the people trying to rattle the most effective Speaker of the House in generations are pathetic power players. Linda Sanchez ended her pursuit of leadership in the Democratic caucus six days ago - after her husband was indicted on federal criminal charges in Connecticut. That Moulton was floating her name yesterday is indication that this group is not just behind the ballgame, they don’t even read the news.

Rep. Marcia Fudge has been out on the speaking circuits trying to accuse Pelosi of not paying attention to issues of race, but it will prove to be difficult as (a) Fudge has not yet declared her candidacy for speaker, and (b) black women in the House largely line up behind Pelosi, including the iconic Barbara Lee and Maxine Waters.

That leaves Karen Bass. In my judgment, Bass would have been the only credible challenger to Pelosi had she chosen to run. Not because of her gender or her race but because she was the only potential challenger who has had a job like this before. Karen Bass served as the 67th Speaker of the California State Assembly from 2008 to 2010, leading the legislature of the largest and most diverse state in the union.
