My next-to-last defense of Bill CLINTON

Next-to-last because of a proverb in Spanish that it's your NEXT-to-last (beer/whatever) when you're leaving, because your LAST one is when you're dying.

Back then, we Dems did our barricades thing defending Bill. Yes, lots of the crap was VastRightwingConspiracy crap. It really was. But we Libs always look inward for root causes rather than Wingnut-looking-outward to blame outsiders, and Bill had a lot to account for.

And my Big Lesson from the defense-o'-Bill thing was: We lost a lot of our AGENDA time all for the defense of one charismatic leader. It takes a gawdawful time and energy to win power only to lose it all for ONE human and his personal failings.

So, today, here we are with a little reporter-on-the-make raking Bill over today's new coals about whether he has PERSONALLY apologized to Ms Monica LEWINSKY.

Here's MY apology to Monica LEWINSKY in the voice of Bill:

"I was the most powerful boss in the world. You were the lowliest of employees. As much power I had over the world, I had nothing to gain from you that I couldn't get and DID get from PRINCESSES of politics and celebrities. You came on to me and I played. It was stupid of me and I have and will continue to pay for my stupidity. It's too bad Hillary's crystal ashtray didn't kill me on my head. I apologized to you and everybody in public, but you don't deserve a personal apology in private. You played a silly immature game and I was a grown idiot."

************************* O.K., Bill, can you butt your way out of our work on our agenda? Thanks.

While the Bill saga was going on, I was in my late 40s and had attained Supervisor level after some 15 years of grunt work in a vast bureaucracy. I was known for nose-to-grindstone, stuck-in-the-60s, no-funny-stuff, would-work-even-if-winning-the-lottery.

So one of the main impacts of the job was hiring, affecting who would shape the future. And I hired about 20 young people, including many women in positions women had not accessed before.

One of them was a 24 year old, yes bright but disconcertingly forward in a in-your-face/invading-your-space way. I was shocked when she called me "dude."

So it was standard procedure to have one-on-one progress assessment conferences in the Supervisor's office with the door closed every month.

Soon, like in the third or fourth month, this girl rolled her rolling office chair over right next to my rolling chair. I was taken aback without making a fuss, but I rolled my chair a foot or two away. This happened again that first time and then again the next couple of conferences.

She had apparently also done research on me, that I had been in the Navy and was an English Lit major. So one day. there she was with a white blouse with little blue anchors all over it. And then she gifted me a one-volume Complete Works of Shakespeare.

Plus, all of us at this workplace, bureaucracy-wide, went to lunch together 2-3 times per week and to Happy Hours 1-2 times per month.

Throughout ALL of the activities of conferences, lunches, and Happy Hours I *never* showed any interest - or rather, was in a befuddlement of batting back whatever ping pong thing she was shooting.

All of this was playing out during the Bill and Monica saga.

Eventually she cut out the crap - WITH ME, that is. It was also the time of the Survivor voting-off-the-island t.v. series, when cut-throat game-playing became the Thing. And she discovered that my Superiors were not so scrupulous about resisting her career advancement ploys. Yes, she laid my Boss and various niches of the chain of command.

She wormed her way into the higher echelons of Power and got herself into being a Supervisor in another part of the area. She crashed and burned, was resisted by the employees who played their own games of filing Complaints against her.

But she had come to the attention of the Very Big Biggest Boss of the entire chunk of the outfit, who saw her as her up-and-coming daughter and protege and who determined to save her at all costs. They needed to move her out of the slot she was in, so they decided to create an empty slot, meaning emptying me OUT. My slot was only a temporary stepping stone for her, so after she encountered more resistance at my slot, she was promoted (Peter Principle) upward to boss-of-Supervisors, and when the Big Boss retired, she became the Big Boss.

Here's the deal: When I rolled my chair away from her, it's what Bill CLINTON should have done.

You could word it any way you want and the people who hate him would still hate him, and I include progressives in that mix because it’s clear that’s where a good deal of the animus come from. It’s not just crazy RWers.

adjective
last but one in a series of things; second to the last.
"the penultimate chapter of the book"
synonyms: next-to-last, second-to-last, second-last

A search for a chance to use this and you just threw one away! William Buckley is spinning in his grave.....

Replying in a frivolous way to the occasional substantive post by a frequently erratic member. "Snarkiness in a gutfelt thread is missing the point."

And the "t" in your "the" needs capitalization. And Bill BUCKLEY can rot in Hades in his pool of pretentiousness, pedantry, and putridity.
