We do ask moderators to try to avoid "hot button" discussions; at the same time, they are human beings and are allowed to have opinions.

For the record, the OP in question never came up for discussion in the moderator forum, so you are wrong to think that the moderator tried to have it locked. Even if if had come up for discussion, moderators must act by consensus and are not allowed to act unilaterally.

And I'm sure his name has been "bandied about." People have made quite a sport of insulting and harassing our moderators. Nevertheless, they continue to freely volunteer their time to do the vital work that other people aren't willing to do.
