Something work's resident right winger said
Something the local right winger at work said the other day was that he has no desire to travel outside the United States. Somehow that didn't surprise me.

There's an entire world outside the US, and maybe a few days in a place where we're not the center of the universe would do a world of good.

As far as "a few days in a place where we're not the center of the universe"..I agree, and for more reasons than what you might think..

A couple of years ago I was on the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia and had the opportunity to hear a Brit and a Croat get in a heated political argument at a table full of Euros plus two Aussies and two Yanks (me and Mr. Whathell)

It was interesting on its own merits (about EU membership) but also uniquely enjoyable because it had NOTHING whatsoever to do with America..Zip, Nada..Nothing.

It was completely Eurocentric and I didn't realize what a singular relief it was until I experienced it.

8. Great destinations!..I've only seen a bit of Paris (a weekend) and
have only been to Verona and Vicenza in Italy...Definitely would like to go Want to got to Rome, at ssome point.

How nice that your daughter speaks Italian!..What did she study there?

I will be going back to the Dalmatian coast of Croatia -- It's right across the Adriatic sea from the northern coast of Italy, and has MANY Venetian/Italian elements..It has a number of Roman ruins, including an ampitheater in Pula and Diocletians Palace in Split. It also has five or six Unesco World Heritage sites.

It's a beautiful place, popular with Europeans for years, but just starting to get noticed by Americans...Make sure you get to go sometime, as it's also a bit cheaper than Italy, for instance, because its not yet entered the EU.

9. Would LOVE to visit Croatia!
Would really be 'different' for me, as I've done 'western' Europe.

Daughter did a regular college semester; don't recall her courses, but was arranged by her school.

10. You should go, Elleng
If you have extra time in Italy, you can take a ferry across the Adriatic, they run pretty regularly.

If you want to know more, try googling "croatia travel"..There are a few websites, I just can't remember their names..I think one is called "Adria.net" or "Adriatica.net"..something like that.
