More importantly, have you been to a part of the world where there are no signs in banks that imply that it's forbidden, but people simply know that it is?

Allow me to give fragmentary hints that might explain the kind of thing that I have in mind:

1. If you want an authorized book, then you go to a store that sells new books.

2. Old books can be purchased legally, but only from authorized old book dealers. All old book dealers are registered with the government so that they can be found and inconvenient old books can be purchased by the government for disposal.

3. The government directs the attention of people to the fact that transactions involving illegal drugs sometimes go bad and somebody gets injured or killed. As highly regulated institutions, banks are almost an arm of government, and need to take precautions to protect ordinary people who use banking services from the repercussions of a used book deal gone bad.

4. Although someone might be afraid of being robbed before being able to get to a bank, that's too bad. If you choose to get involved in a risky activity such as selling a used book, then it's your responsibility to deal with the problem of having cash that you want to deposit into a bank account before you are robbed.
