Thoughts on "over 35 models"...
Edited on Thu Jun-12-08 06:04 PM by bliss_eternal
...or at least the competition and tv show?

http://www.sheknows.com/articles/entertainment/television/804139-TVLand-says-she-has-got-the-look.htm

(forgive me for linking an article from a site with a pink background). ;)

I have mixed feelings about this show.

A part of me is rather pissed off that all of a sudden women in this age group "exist" because "they say so."
Women in this age bracket have always existed, just as women of size exist--and women that fall in between those sizes, with imperfect bodies--exist.

It all seems to boil down to the fact that they realize women in this age bracket are marketable, and less about the fact that it is absolutely ridiculous to try to sell clothing (or anything else) to women 35 and over using sized 0 teenagers. It's always been silly and inappropriate, but suddenly now

I frequently have channels like Nick and TV Land on in the background while working, so I've heard (and seen) the ads for this show for well over a month. I find a few of the ads annoying in the stance they take.
One says something like a (not a direct quote),"...these women are going from ordinairy to extraordinairy." As if to say that only women deemed worthy to be human clothes hangers, and props for advertisers are doing anything of value in life.

I'm sorry, but what the hell is that?

1. The only immediate answer is turn off the tee vee
The tee vee exists to sell you stuff you don't need. Fuck it.

I'd suggest your friendly neighborhood classical or jazz radio station :-)

2. Belch.
America's top "She's Got The Look" meaning she's still a totally-awesome-meat-puppet show.

What it is, is stupid. Many women over 35, feminist or not, realize the value of personhood and the shallow waters of 6 inch heels, mini-skirts and all purpose fuckability. More woman-as-caricature IMO.

3. Agreed.
Reality tv seems another way to pit women against one another, under the guise of entertainment.

Whether it's modeling, dating, dancing or surviving on some island--at some point, all the women in these shows become caricatures.

4. this is like the Dove beauty ads.
Don't forget to objectify older women, too! Apparently, this is supposed to be liberating for older women, lest we suffer the humiliation of NOT being objectified.

5. I have it DVRing, but I haven't watched any yet
However, I must admit, I *LOVE* reality TV, even the "bad" reality TV. Survivor, America's Next Top Model, Project Runway, Gay Straight or Taken, etc.

I have to admit, I've watched my share.

Caught five minutes of Real World Hawaii while switching channels and could not stop watching. As sickening as I found the concept of The Bachelor, I watched the spin-off (the Bachelorette). I was fascinated by the first season of MTV's Tough Enough. The Osbournes episodes sort of blur together, so I'm not sure if I watched season one or two.

Just a few of my prior guilty pleasures--at least the ones I'm not too ashamed to admit I've viewed. ;)

7. ever notice how the "celebrations" of "older women"
are really congratulating a few women who manage to look much younger than they are?

"...she still looks good."

"...looks good, for her age." :eyes: As if to say, she shouldn't look good, because she's ancient.

Yes, I've noticed. It's kind of depressing.

(sigh)
