Quick, before Frank yanks it (Post Secret project's comment on male privilege):
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 10:35 AM by BlueIris
There's a nice note beneath a post card sent to the famous Post Secret project about a subject near and dear to feminists (under the post card with "I think life is easier for men") written on it. The link is time sensitive and should be gone by tonight.

1. Thanks for posting
I wonder if there is any compilation of stories from people who made the male to female transition. I think that would be an interesting, and possibly angering read.

Totally unrelated, but the postcard beneath the comment you referred to is from an address less than 5 miles from me. I just thought that was neat.

2. Oh, there was a great book that came out a couple of years ago on the M-T-F experience...
it wasn't a compilation of stories, just a well-written auto-biography of a MTF transsexual's experience. Which I can't remember just now. Dammit.

On an unrelated note, I LOVE the Post Secret project. Frank Warren put up three of my secrets in early '05, which really helped me start making progress toward establishing greater mental health. Anyone who wants to send him a card totally should.

4. If you can find or remember that book, please post the name here.
That definitely sounds like something worth reading.

Though, I'd like to see a more systematic study done too. Transsexuals (in either direction) are in a unique position to really see the differences in how people of any perceived gender are treated.

3. That is truly a good Doc
All transgendered have a difficult time it seems to me. I have several transgendered friends-- only one MTF who has had the complete surgery, and ONLY one FTM, and that last one through my husband. (He had been cruel to the guy at one time and happened to run into him. My husband had felt like shit about it for years, and was grateful for the chance to apologize)

My one friend (who is a decorated Vietnam vet, active in Veterans issues, I think I posted about her before) learned to wear "girl" things, short skirts, high heels, jewelry, make-up. As her voice changed, she practiced being very soft spoken, walks with a slight sway, and has a "glamor shot" on her internet page. She's older than me, and NEEDED to learn these things to feel completely female. A lot of goddam work for the patriarchy if you ask me, yet it puts a big magnifying glass on how we perceive Woman.

I haven't actually talked to her about male privilege and I also haven't seen her in a while. I wanted to mind my business when she was going through her changes other than accepting her, but it's been a least a couple of years. I wonder if she's a feminist yet?
