2. Poor girl.
That is awful.

However, I object to you grouping all adult sex trade workers, most of whom are there consensually, into the same category as an abused 14-year-old girl. In fact, it's offensive, because you're assuming that adult women do not have the capacity to consent (as a 14 year old cannot consent to sex)

I've explained this again and again so I'm not going to launch into an epic rant. If you've seen my other posts on here you know where I stand.

What happened to that girl was awful. But I wouldn't use it for politcal gain by comparing her situation to something that is obviously not the same thing.

3. AspieGrrl, I really enjoy your posts and I do hope you stick around.
I'm not going to argue with you about the sex industry either. I do recommend that you learn more about it from people who don't have a vested interest in that same industry, which is where much of the defenses come from. It's rather like using oil company propaganda to learn about global warming.

Here's a good start:

4. I'm very disturbed by how much commentary
there was in the cross post regarding the mother. Yes, she is guilty of not protecting her child or being her advocate. Horrible that she has apparently either chosen her husband or has been abused/brainwashed into staying with him instead of supporting her daughter. Whatever. There's just so much venom spewed at her that it makes me think people think she's more guilty than the actual perpetrator.

6. It's so much easier to blame her than the perpetrator
It feeds into these notions we have about the so-called "maternal instinct", the irrepressible animalistic male sex drive, and that somehow a female is responsible for the behavior of every male in her midst. If there were no mother available you can be sure they'd try to find a way to blame the girl. Can't blame the man. Can't blame the "sex industry". That would be goring a sacred cow.

5. That article is heartbreaking and infuriating.

And the whole family sat behind him, instead of with her. x(

That right there says quite a lot about how readily people blame the victim.

7. I'm kicking this...
...as the links have now hit the archives. Discussion of this topic can't be construed as "rallying the troops." ;)

8. I can't believe that anyone would think
Edited on Mon Apr-14-08 12:42 AM by ThomCat
(on the linked thread) that all forms of servitude are equally bad, that getting raped and sodomized several times every hour every day isn't really an issue.
x(

And the bullshit tangents about how wonderful it would be if prostitution could just be legalized everywhere. Trafficing would miraculously disappear.
:eyes:

That the standard excuses and bullshit can show up in that thread about something as blatantly evil as this really surprised me. :(

9. I know the daughter of a women
Who forced her to perform sex acts with her mother. It started at 7 or 8. Her mother is now dead, (of of the greatest acts of forgiveness I've ever seen was by this young woman, but it's her story, probably not for me to tell on the internet)but that young women finding her own sexual path with her own sexual choices was a long rough road, and will never be complete. Legalization would not have stopped what happened, nor will it fix our troubled sexual dichotomies.

When we are indoctrinated into thinking sexual servitude is a choice, we're in trouble.

I've found this in the male Gay community as well, the young prostitutes are feminized (no matter what their presentation) and treated much the same way, not only because of gender stereotypes but because of the whole sex trade infrastructure. Female = sex class.

In my perfect world, sex would never be for sale, but gifts we give one another, sometimes the greatest gift.

11. I really, truly wish
that the people who purchase sex, take sex from coerced women, or take advantage of sex slavery could be made to understand what is really happening to the people on the other side of those transactions. I wish they had the empathy to understand that it's not just about them fulfilling their fantasies, and them wanting it to be special doesn't really make it so.

I try to be optimistic about human nature, but these types of situations really drive home the point that selfishness can really distort people's perceptions. People can (and do) ignore the grossest injustices using the shallowest rationalizations if that's what they want.

:(

I am sure that there are some, few, people who can sell sex deliberately and willingly without coercion because that's what they want to do. There is a vast amount of diversity among people, and what they want. Those few people are constantly used to justify the sex trade. We all keep hearing about them. But even if that's true, the existance of those few people doesn't prove to me that all those other people in the sex trade are there willingly and want it too. :(

10. Imagine what they'd say about "mail order brides"...

...another form of buying women for sex and servitude--and apparently it's legal. :eyes: The guys that do it can go on all day about wanting a "companion." Sex dolls can provide some of the forms of companionship they seek, a housekeeper could probably do the rest.

If they can admit that's not sufficient because they really want the "wait on me--hand and foot" shit, that would be considerably more honest. I'd still find it vile, but at least truthful.

12. Anyone who is subjugated and robbed of choices
will be robbed of the opportunity to define their situation. "It is the victor who writes history and decides who was right." So the slaver always says that the slave wanted to be a slave and benefitted from being a slave.
:(

It's truly tragic that so many people are so willing to listen to the slavers and believe what they say.
