Deadwood fans - our last season is upon us
SO and I don't have cable, but I DID have a business trip not to far away, so we packed up, and were able to watch the series premiere courtesy of the Hyatt! (I am so obsessed that I called ahead to the hotel to be SURE they had HBO!!) We were settle down in time to pour a toast of pinot grigot to David Milch as the credits rolled.

One non spoiler that no one but Buffy fans will relate to: (is there anyone out there who watched both Buffy AND Deadwood?) --- we certainly know who the season's Big Bad will be, don't we?

SPOILER questions about the first episode:

What the hell is up with Joanie?
What's gotten into Bullock?
Who the hell is Shanaussey?

One sad thing about basing the show on real people is that anyone who has read the bios of the main characters knows where Jane is heading.

1. While I can totally relate to calling ahead to be assured that
they had HBO, otherwise, get me a reservation elsewhere--I am not following the Buffy reference, as I never followed that series.

As for your other questions: let's see from what I've gathered, the big war is about to begin between Hearst & Swearengen. And let me know if you don't want any spoilers because I'm also an avid follower of the BB's over at HBO & they have plenty to say about what's ahead. (The Hearst thing is huge! He's an evil, evil man & bent on power & wealth--true to history.) You have to read Rhoswen's spoilers to really know what the future episodes may hold in store, though she doesn't guarantee that her info is 100% gospel.

As I haven't read up on Joanie & was not aware that her character is historically based, I'll ignore your innuendo (I don't want to lose Joanie). While she may have toyed with suicidal thoughts in the first episode, she also gathered her senses & wits and didn't do the deed. Perhaps she (and the writers) are wiser than we've given them credit for. While there is talk of a suicide, if it happens I doubt it will be Joanie--

I love Bullock & Alma & will always hope they re-unite, though history also tells us that Seth fathered a few daughters with his wife, but---maybe the Mrs. Bullock of HBO does not go the distance and perhaps his first born with Alma will be a daughter & she is the destined Mrs. Bullock that history gives us--(I can slant this to my way of thinking, ha-ha-ha, I've learned from the writers!) But, there's a great fondness for Ellsworth, he's the knight in shining armor! :D

Please, do tell, what are your thoughts? (I have no dread of spoilers, either, please, spoil away!!!) I feel like it's Christmas in June--what the heck took them so long to give us our "Deadwood" back. How dare they tell us it is the last season!!! Are they mad?

3. We've held out this long, but it's tough
The past few years, I've traveled pretty constantly on Sunday nights (8am Monday morning start times for work), so I've been able to watch HBO at various hotels, a friend tapes "Deadwood" for us, and now we rent "Six Feet Under" from the video store (are you catching on that we're a little behind the times technologically?)

We watch WAY too much TV during the year (Earl, The Office, Lost, Boston Legal) and want to try to wean away during the summer, read more, maybe with a baseball game on the radio. I know my SO - if we had cable, he'd be watching it 18 hours a day.

Know some of the history from our trip out to Deadwood and hike through Mt. Moriah cemetary, but not all of it. Know that Seth Bullock had himself buried a good 500 feet above everyone else in town, that Charlie Utter was real, that a decent-sized Jewish population grew up in Deadwood, that Al died years later "getting off a train" and that Jane's end wasn't pretty, but that she did end up back in Mt. Moriah with Bill.

Can't WAIT for future episodes!

(Oh, and every year on Buffy there was a new "Bid Bad" for her to contend with - an uber-vampire, Angel run amok, a Frankenstein-like creature, etc. Fans used to watch the first few episodes to get a hint what this year's Big Bad would be, and I think we all know that in Deadwood, it's Mr. Hearst.)
