Liberalnurse called this.......

Carnivale Thread....Feb. 7th.

" Who here thinks Brother Justin and Iris are setting Tommy Dolan up for the crime of the Ministry fire?"

I think the verbatim statement by Iris will bite Tommy....

7. Some gloating, but
It wasn't a "verbatim statement". If you'll notice, the statement changed completely, including Dolan's own signature.

Who started the rain, Sophie or Ben?

Is Momma a freakout or what?

I'm getting somewhat tired of whole Dreyfus family problems. Why is everything that's not directly Ben vs Justin focused on these people?

Edited on Mon Feb-14-05 06:07 AM by liberalnurse
it was a set-up.... Get it down on paper like a confession by Iris then have him read it aloud..... Iris didn't even know the whole plan....

Mama is an emotionally abusive mother.....she knows so much but never tells her daughter anything.

I think both, Sophie and Ben contributed to the weather....Ben with Thunder, Sophie the Rain.Regardless, the sex was definitely "HOT"...
The rain is cleansing for the soul or of the sin???

Justin's radio sermon continue to summons Sophie and I think it said something about a child in the clip???? I'll have to listen again.

Ben will be highly motivated to go after Justin if he has Sophie in his flock....Ben truely cares for Sophie.

Episode preview:

I think Stroud is pretending to be Scudder to have Ben trapped in the Motel since it does show that they meet......I think Ben will kill Stroud....maybe wishful thinking but ya never know.

Down the road...I think Management wants Scudder to kill him...it may be significant to the balance.....what ever that may actually be..???

Just a crazy thought.....Could Justin be Sophies father? Justin is much older...late 40's and could of been with Appy....Sophie is in her 20's......

About Rita Sue & Stumpy.

I don't know what their link is, and until you brought this up, hadn't even really thought about it.

I do enjoy the semi-focus on them, regardless. It brings a balance of "normality" to everything else that's going on, they're someone people can relate to, and identify with, you know? They make Carnivale a little more human.

17. true
and I enjoyed the episodes in the first season that focused on "carnie life". Things are getting stripped down now, unfortunately.

The ratings are apparently not great, for some reason. Go figure.

9. They made it rain
I've heard of the "earth moving" during a pleasurable meeting, but Ben and Sofie made it rain.

I give props to liberalnurse for calling the Justin betrayal of Tommy Dolan. That was not a spoiler, just a good call by a fan.

I felt bad for poor Stumpy. The man has nothing and is the worst father and husband in the world, but he is trying to hold on to some sense of family. I did not think Jonesy would beat him that badly.

I don't know if that was Lotz in Ruthie, or if somehow the healing has backfired? He killed Lotz to save Ruthie, did she somehow get his blindness (which management removed right before Ben killed Lutz).

Who was the little girl Sofie saw, was it a young Apollonia or a young Sofie?

Very freaky episode.

Could that be a metaphor for the Republican "values voters"?

Could make a nice college essay.

10. SPOILER for next week's episode - Re: management
We get to see management's face next week (or whats left of it). When the producers were casting for the part, they wanted an actor who was a double amputee. Don't know if this is true, but two of the Carnivale chat groups I regularly visit have posted this in the last week. I can't wait to see him.

11. Confusing episode (aren't they all?)
My wife had called the Dolan set-up too. She noted that he was writing down the confession when Iris spoke. And she remembered in the hospital when Justin apparently had the ability to change what the doctor was writing.

Ben and Sofie - dayum. I didn't think that was going to happen just yet! But to bring about a downpour in the middle of the dustbowl, now that's some serious voodoo!

14. Well today,
I keep thinking that Justin is the Usher. .....and the father of Sophie because it is the Tattooed man, the Usher image giving it to Appy. Here is my thinking.....

That Geek who met Justin at the radio station said,"I'm here for the Usher"......In the dreams, the Usher bleeds blue, he cut Justin and was surprised he bled red. Justin had not read the text yet that the Geek presented him with.....Justin then went and got the identical body tattoo job.....

In all of Ben's sequence dreams, in the battle field, he sees all the essential characters but not a known image of Justin. He sees Scudder, Lodz, Management/the Russian, himself and the Tattooed Man.

Thats enough for the moment....I need some coffee.....

What do you folks think?

15. There is another Usher, and Justin needs to kill Scudder to become
the new Usher. That is my take on it so far. The old Usher raped Appie to produce Sofie. Sophie is the spawn of evil and will be the force that brings down Ben. The Usher brings the force of evil into the world, and Sofie may be that evil. I'm not sold on that yet, but it looking more and more like that is the case. Now that Sofie is alone, I think she makes her way over to the Church of the Air and meets Justin.

I don't know is Scudder was the old Usher. I used to think Scudder was the tattooed man, but now I wonder if it was management or if it was someone else.

I am so stumped by this story, but it sure is one hell of a ride as we try to figure it out.

18. You know......
I find the issue with the Usher too confusing. I don't believe the writers have clarified the roles the Avatars at all.....I often ask myself; Who was, is and wants to be the Usher? Is it different from the Creature of Light and the Creature of Darkness? I understand free will plays a pivital role but the goals to be obtained by the Avatars are too muddled.

So, speculation can be tolerated for just so long. Things are fun but I need more clarity.

19. Yes, the Usher stuff is WAY too confusing.
We know that Justin (CoD) must kill Scudder (CoD/CoL?) in order to become the Usher.

But in that case the CoD becomes the Usher? Well what happens to the "current" Usher (if there is one)?

Considering that Knauf says he has material for 3 seasons and could easily stretch it to 6, I worry that we won't get any real answers for a long, long time.

20. That will be the primary downfall of the show.
Folks need a little edge so to speak, a need to know where to root. We barely have that and we are in the second season. Everything else is magnificently done...... I suppose by the end of this season, much more will be revealed and my questions answered. I hope it is enough to go into a 3rd season.

22. They don;t want to drag it out too far.
Knauf says it was meant to be told in three seasons, but he can wrap it up with a special movie if there is no 3rd season. There is not enough ratings to lock in another season. HBO stuck glad with Sex and the City and Sopranos, but Carnivale and Deadwood have not popped as much. They may go back to a sitcom and dump these great dramas.

24. Ratings are different for HBO
Since HBO does not do product placement in Deadwood or run commercials, its all about subscribers. The initial ratings for the opening Deadwood show were 5.8 million. They dropped off after Wild Bill died and finished in the 3-4 range. The real question is "do people sign up when it is on the air." HBO gets about a million subscribers when Sopranos is on. At $12 a month, that a boatload of extra money for the show. Those numbers give HBO more money for original films and such. If people don't sign up to watch Deadwood and only 3 million subscribers watch, it may not justify the costs of shooting. Carnivale has the same issues, but the ratings for Carnivale are lower.

I love these shows and I wish more people would watch. I have more hope for Deadwood though. The early spoilers sound like this is going to be one hell of an opening episode.

21. I'm not sure who is the COD
We all think Justin is the COD, but what is he is merely the usher of the COD. I think of an usher as paving the path and helping the one along. If he is the new usher, what is he ushering.
Maybe he is not the usher but is the COD and Scudder is the usher. He needs to kill the usher to become the COD.

Management throws me for a loop too, b/c that guy can't be on the COL side. He just can't be "good".
