Any comments on Serena's departure from Law & Order?
The L&O boards are howling with laughter over the 'firing' of ADA Serena Sutherlyn, who, at the end, asks "Is it because I'm a lesbian?" If you don't watch the program, let me assure you that there have been NO indications that this character was gay-it was like the line was tacked on for shock value.

I was wondering what you thought of it, especially gay and lesbian folks.

1. My daughter, husband, and I had quite a bit of discussion over that.
Tell me Jack McCoy isn't "passionate" and "emotional" about his cases! I mean, come on! He nearly lost his license in that drunk-driving case by advising the flight attendant who served the drinks to leave the country -- and he did that because he was still upset about losing his previous ADA to a drunk driver!

His voice is always breaking with emotion during this argument and that -- and Serena is fired because she's too emotional? Forget about whether she's gay -- she's got a lawsuit on her hands, in my view. Men are "zealous" and women are "emotional."

And I suppose the DA is going to admit, "Yes, Serena, I fired you because you're a lesbian." Saying it ain't so doesn't mean it ain't so!

I knew the actress was going to leave the show but that was a pretty cheesy way to do it, IMO.

2. Your thoughts echo those I've read on L&O boards
many people have been concerned by the show's drift to the right since the advent of FDT, and this flimsy excuse for firing Serena they found to be out and out sexist. Others, who were gay or had gay friends/relatives, bemoaned the fact that the character wasn't developed as gay from the beginning-could have been a good way of getting the gay perspective on some of the cases out there.

The sentiments of many fans were summed up in one poster's comment:

'In this scene, L&O didn't jump the shark-they became the shark.'

5. She's been the best actress in that role on L&O
I don't watch the show that much anymore, but they have had some terrible actors/actresses in that ADA role, and Elizabeth Rohm is a much better actress than Angie Harmon, and the other one who is now married to Richard Gere, and and and ...

6. We've been laughing our asses off
On the TWoP boards we've been laughing our asses off. "Is this because I'm a lesbian?" has become a running joke.

Craptastic line + shitty acting as usual by the Elizabot = comedy gold. Dick Wolf may have wanted her departure to be memorable and it is, just not for the reason he wanted...
