Man nabbed for dog's torture death

A man was arrested early Thursday in connection with the torture of a puppy who was found severely burned on Good Friday. The dog later died.

Dallas police arrested Deshann Quatrail Brown, 21, at his mother's home in the Denton County community of Corinth shortly before 1 a.m. He faces several charges, including cruelty to an animal.

Staffers continually updated the shelter’s Web site with pictures of Mercy and details of her prognosis as news of the incident spread through the media and across the Internet. When Mercy died Sunday, the overwhelming number of phone calls and e-mails that had been messages of hope turned into statements of outrage.

When news came Thursday that an arrest had been made, people from around the world that had been following the story began asking if they could start petitions to beg the courts to give the maximum sentence in the case of a conviction.

A female dog rescuers saved after she was found tortured and burned was named Mercy after they said somebody showed her none.

Investigators in Dallas are looking for a suspect in the crime and said they hope someone will come forward with a tip through a 311 hotline number.

"Her ears were burned almost to be unrecognizable," said Dr. Katherine Wells, veterinary surgeon. "So, we've taken off. We've amputated the tips of her ears and we've taken off all the unhealthy skin."

Mercy arrived at Operation Kindness, a no-kill shelter, with 60 percent of her body burned. A vet said she believes someone used a flammable liquid.

I have no words to describe how sad & outraged this makes me feel. How someone could do that?

I hope the young man that did this suffers badly in jail. I know that's not compassionate, but I simply cannot extend my compassion to him.
