Southern Lights on Display

Credit: NASA, Posted on: Sunday, 17 July 2011, 06:45 CDT

One of the STS-135 Atlantis crew members took this photo of the Southern Lights or Aurora Australis while visiting the International Space Station.

Part of the orbiter boom sensor system is seen, as it was attached on the end of the shuttle's robotic arm (out of frame). A part of the port side wing of the shuttle is at right.

1. Track the shuttle (and ISS) in real time:

Because of remote ISP addresses you may have to register to view your actual location, but fear not, they don't spam and it's free. I see it just passed ove Cleveland.

Click on either STS135 or Zarya (the name if the ISS) then "5 day predictions":

http://www.n2yo.com/?s=32960

You can find five day predictions of when they will visibly pass over your location. Barring cloudy skies, and with some luck, you may get to watch them streak overhead at 17,000 mph. The whole thing lasts no more than five minutes, and never fails to awe.

I had the privilege of watching a pass last year just after separation where the shuttle was chasing the International Space Station from horizon to horizon.
