Is your school showing Obama's back-to-school speech on Tuesday?
Obama's Back-to-School Speech Coming Tuesday
By Dakarai Aarons on September 10, 2010 12:16 PM

President Obama will address America's schoolchildren in his second back-to school speech Tuesday in Philadelphia.

The president's address will be given at 1 p.m. EST at Julia R. Masterman School, a middle and high school magnet in Philadelphia. The public school, which has ranked No. 45 on U.S. News and World Report's list of top high schools, boasts of sending 93 percent of its students on to college, according to Rita Giordano of the Philadelphia Inquirer. It serves students in grades 5 to 12, including the mayor's daughter.

Our school district is showing it in the evening for interested students and parents. (Bet no one attends.)

2. Wonder if that's why schools in our district are off.

They say it's a 'professional development' day, but this is the first time EVER (and I grew up in the Christina district) that I remember a professional development day being done on a Tuesday instead of a Monday or Friday.

Probably is the case so they don't have to deal with those parents that want their kids to hear it and those that don't.

3. I doubt it
they didn't last year. In fact, they never even mentioned it. We watched it later as a family.

4. No.
I didn't even know he was giving one. 1pm EST would be 30 minutes after school is over at my school here on the left coast.

I remember the outrage that some of us didn't watch the inauguration in our classrooms, and the furor over last year's "back to school" speech. I think a "back to school" speech is a good idea. The nation is so polarized, though, that our presidents are either heroes or enemies to most, which makes thoughtful listening and discussion unlikely.

Perhaps it would be better to air the speech in the evening, when families could watch it together at home. I'm betting that it's more appropriate in a family setting and to a family discussion, for those that will tune in.

Personally, as an educator, I'd like educators to give a speech for HIM to listen to. He needs it.

5. I didn't know about it either.
What's he going to say? Don't worry kids, you aren't accountable, your teachers are. Many of your teachers belong to an evil organization known as a teachers union that my administration is trying to abolish. Sure, you should listen to your teachers but remember, if you really want to get back at your teacher, make sure you just fill in a design on your testing form. Your teacher will be labeled "bad," publicly shamed, and fired. Remember boys and girls, all this testing is about your teachers, not you. You just need to memorize as much as you can and repeat after me, "Would you like fries with that?"

6. Ouch.
If he were honest, that's what he'd be saying. Instead, he'll exhort them to work hard, and encourage parents to encourage, support, and hold students accountable.

Remember when some teachers were impressed with the campaign speeches he gave saying that parents and students should be accountable? This is that part of his program. A yearly speech.

For teachers, though, it's a bit more than a speech, isn't it?

7. Speeches are just words and Obama makes a very pretty word salad.
The reality of what he and Arne are doing is not pretty and it's being done under the radar so most people have no clue.

8. If all people do is listen to the pretty speeches,
they won't know any different, that's for sure.

9. The hullaballoo last year casued my cousin to yank her kids out of their private school
And before anyone says it, yes she knows that it was a private school and this was their right to refuse to show it, but that does not make it the right thing to do (now where have we have been hearing that line lately?).

Anyway, this "Christian" school refused to show it or even acknowledge that it was taking place at all. That was the last straw for my cousin (other incidents in the past included a social studies teacher who persistently said "Democrat Party"), and she yanked her two children out of the school at the end of the semester.
