We ask you to join us for Another Teachers' Letters to Obama Roundtable: TUESDAY, August 31.
Topic:
"Turn This Policy Around" (perspectives and ideas around what federal policymakers label "low-performing" schools). Featuring teachers who work in schools that were reconstituted, charter schools and a large urban district recently labeled "New Orleans without Hurricane Katrina" by Arne Duncan. Hear their thoughts--and share your own.
Our guests will include:
Chuck Olynyk, an experienced history teacher who declined to reapply for his own job, and was
"reconstituted" along with many of his colleagues at Fremont High in Los Angeles. Chuck has been an
outspoken critic of the turnaround process.
Sabrina Stevens Shupe is a teacher who has worked in struggling
communities in Philadelphia and Denver. Her most recent teaching experience in Denver caused her to take a year off from teaching and launch the Failing Schools Project. The goals of the project are to empower teachers, students, and parents in so-called "failing" schools to share their thoughts on what it's really like to work and learn in them, and to promote alternative way of thinking about and approaching the problems these schools face.
Nikki Barnes, a National Board certified teacher who has worked in regular public schools and charters.
And some special guests from Detroit!
The 90-minute session begins at 8:30 p.m. ET/ 5:30 p.m. PT. Register here:
