Jesus H. Christ on a goalpost. Now they're friggin' celebrities.
First there was the fashion show. Seriesly.

Then there was the guest shot on Jon Stewart.

And now, Letterman. :eyes"

What country am I living in??? They LOST!!! They lost at the last minute to a bunch of lightweight nobodies!! :grr: :argh: :nuke: Did Ben Roethlisberger get to go to Disney World??

Perhaps if they had paid a bit more attention to the pitch and less to the runway, we'd actually have something to celebrate.

6. But at least the Sox might get a chance for redemption
in the Series. :-)

The pathetic fashion-plate losers? Not so much. In four years, the Frances and Englands of the world will have snuffed out any chance for a return. :(

3. AMerican Olympic teams that won the silver have never gotten any publicity?
Hard to believe.

4. The one that snaps to mind is the 1972 men's basketball team
which was rooked out of the gold by the then-Soviet Union. Back then, we were outraged. Now? "Oooh. Nice try, girls!" :grr:

8. Another "ugly American" post from you
This is why international folk often don't like us, because people like you whine (oh and make nasty comments about international teams) about finishing in the finals of the World Cup is not good enough. The ladies don't fucking need idiots like you to be fans. Want to make more disgusting Japan comments? Because Japan also beat Germany who was the FAVORITE to win the title. Seriously dude, you've made me completely dislike you with this nonsense. And I'm not the only one. Welcome to my IGNORE list.

9. For the benefit of the rest of you
since my longtime friend has exercised the "nuclear option" :(

Do the Brazilians fawn over and congratulate the Argentines after a win? Or the Germans the French? That's simply not how it works. We will never become even a second-rate footballing nation without that dash of HATRED.

10. To elaborate: Let's take the example from upthread
of a Red Sox-Pirates World Series. A sports columnist from the Globe, or at least the Herald, would be perfectly justified in referring to the upstart Pirates as "lightweight nobodies".

Now let us suppose the Sox jump out to a 3-1 lead, then piss away the final three games while the Pirates grab the glory. I seriously doubt that there would be a duck boat parade on the Charles in the Sox' future! And anyone who dared to post a "Well done, Pittsburgh!" thread on any self-respecting New England sports blog would be vilified as I have been here.

12. Every other sports athlete tries to turn recognition into publicity/money
Why should we expect women's soccer to be different, especially since it's a sport that's only periodically relevant to most of this country?
