2. What about Bob Wise?
Will his marital situation allow him? (I think he is still in DC.)

5. CBS News is quoting
anonymous Democratic sources that state that Manchin will appoint Nick Casey (state Democratic party chairman, for those of you not familiar with West Virginia politics). See http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20009017-503544.html

That actually makes the most sense. If Manchin wants the seat (and we know that he does!), he can't appoint himself. There is a wealth of statistical information that proves that you won't win an election to a self-appointed seat. But if he appoints someone like Caperton or Wise, Manchin can't expect that either would gracefully step aside in 2012. Nick Casey would.

I could completely see that scenario.

12. "Peter D. Beater was a Master D. Bater."
It might even be a chimp that Joe taps for the job...if a neoCON chimp could be pResident, anything could happen.

I don't see anyone on the political horizon who could lift Robert Byrd's fiddle case, let alone carry Mr. Byrd's little vest pocket book to work every day. I'm not a happy camper!
