Excellent progressive primary challenger for Norm Dicks!

Paul Richmond has declared his candidacy for Congress against Norm Dicks. I have known Paul since his days doing pro bono work for victims of police brutality at the WTO demonstrations in 99. He is the real deal. He's a great speaker and a strong candidate. I hope Norm misunderestimates what he's up against.

Richmond was scheduled to launch his campaign this morning in an appearance at the Kitsap County Courthouse in Port Orchard. Here's the pre-announcement press release:

PRESS RELEASE: Announcement of Candidacy

Paul Richmond, Media Producer and Attorney, will make a formal announcement
concerning his Candidacy for Seat in the 6th Congressional District in
Washington, the seat currently held by Representative Norm Dicks, TUESDAY
MARCH 18, 2008. This will take place 9AM outside the Kitsap County
Courthouse, 614 Division Street in Port Orchard, Washington. There will be
a second opportunity 11.30AM outside the Jefferson County Courthouse,
1820 Jefferson in Port Townsend, Washington.

Richmond has spent most of his adult life advocating for civil liberties. He has
helped end a pilot program that had the National Guard accompanying police on
drug raids, helped to keep the University of Washington Police from acquiring M16 Rifles, and convinced numerous City Councils that those with less money still
have rights.

This campaign will be a voice for the many citizens concerned with our country’s
direction. Because special interests are running our country, we’re watching our
country be destroyed. Because we’re in an unnecessary war, we’re taking on
trillions in debt, while many of our soldiers go to Money Tree to survive week to
week. Because of the War on Crime we have more people in jail than any other
country on the planet, including many of our soldiers’ families. Because of “free
trade” agreements, our flags, our military hardware, and our children’s food are
made in places like China.

Richmond is targeting Dicks in large part because of Dick’s co-sponsorship of the
Homegrown Terrorism Act, a law that threatens to make “ideology” illegal. Dicks
has also supported numerous “free trade” agreements – policies that have turned
us to a debtor Nation. And Dicks supports a “phased withdrawal” from Iraq – the
same policy which brought us the bloodiest years of the Viet Nam conflict.

In recent times, people on many ends of the political spectrum have warned our
government is becoming so removed from the people it’s supposed to represent
and so unaccountable, that we may lose all we care about. It’s not the first time
this has happened, but we need to be honest about it, and call it for what it is.
That is the purpose of this campaign.

We Need to Do Better. We Can Do Better. We Need to Change this Now.
