Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, proposed an amendment that would transfer the remaining funds from the Enterprise and Emerging Technology Funds to the general budgeting fund to lessen the sting public education and social services would feel from proposed budget cuts.
She said that it could result in sparing $200 million in budget cuts. However, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Steve Ogden, R-Bryan, said it would probably only result in a $50-60 million gain.
Sen. Mike Jackson, R-Pearland, said that zeroing out the fund could affect the state’s ability to recruit business to the state.
Davis accepted the critique and responded that the amendment was “something I would usually never advocate.”
She said that the massive cuts to education and social services should be abated as much as possible to prevent negatively affecting the state’s economic competiveness.
