1. Another 22nd District-er and Hinchey lover here!!
From Ithaca, Tompkins County, in the far western reach of the 22nd. I'm really glad we stayed in Hinchey's district, Cheney's plan for NY had us stuck in the district of some repub in the adirondacks!!

Hinchey is absolutely great, among the best in the House!

ANNOUNCING

A major event in the cultural and political life of the Hudson Valley:

DEMOCRATIC FESTIVAL 2004

Saturday, July 31st* 4 – 10 pm

(rain date Sunday, August 1st)

at Dietz Stadium, Kingston

*The same day as the Woodstock Library Fair, but later. Pray for sunshine!

General admission $15; Seniors and students $10

children 12 and under free

Free parking Snack bar

This will be a most enjoyable event for people of all ages and even party affiliations – a fun family outing and a world-class music festival. There will be a variety of supervised children’s activities, fine craft vendors, an exhibit of art by young people and by noted artists, and street theatre. Add six hours of spectacular musical performances by cultural icons of the Hudson Valley region, supported by top professional technical staff, and you have the event of the year for this area!

The Festival audience will be taken on a virtual trip around a world of music – bluegrass, celtic, rock, pop Americana, original blues, witty musical satire, mainstream jazz, free jazz, contemporary folk, ragtime old and new, solo and group song – by over forty world-class performers. Some are creating new material especially for this event, notably the redoubtable Peter Schickele, who will be abetted by a young quartet featuring his own gifted son and daughter.

The Ulster County Democratic Committee sponsors the Democratic Festival 2004 in celebration of recent gains in the County Legislature. For the first time in County history, the Democrats are in position to become the majority party. Proceeds from the Festival will support an all-out effort to get out the vote for Democratic candidates in local elections and in the crucial Presidential race. Democratic elected officials, candidates and County Committee will be present to meet attendees and the press.

Experience the exhilaration! All are welcome. There’s room for everyone in the Democratic Party.

Peter Schickele and the Kerryokians

The renowned musician-composer-educator, multi-Grammy winner,

“discoverer” of the hapless P.D.Q. Bach, host of Schickele Mix on National Public Radio, has created a unique ensemble especially for this event featuring his gifted offspring Karla and Matthew.

Tom Pacheco

One of America’s most powerful and relevant performing songwriters, Tom has a devoted following in the U.S. and in Europe, where he tours frequently. His voice and guitar will be backed in this performance by Bruce Milner on keyboard and Steve Knight on bass.

The Saints of Swing with Rene Bailey and Betty MacDonald

This colorful sextet in the mainstream of jazz features a full line-up of brass,

reeds and rhythm. Rene Bailey is the reigning queen of blues/gospel/jazz singers in these parts. Betty MacDonald is known throughout the jazz world as a premiere vocalist and violinist whose recordings have become classics.

The Five Points Band

Musicianship of the first order makes this dynamic blues-oriented trio add

up to much more than the sum of its parts. Based in Woodstock, the group is active in Europe as well as in New York City and the Hudson Valley. Their third CD is soon to be released.

The Dwyer Family Bluegrass Band

The Dwyers have caused much excitement hereabouts since their arrival from Alaska. Jack (14) is a prodigy on the mandolin and several other instruments. Katey (12) is a pace-setting fiddler. With Dad (Bill) on guitar and Mom (Mindy) on bass, they are a true family band.

Big Sister

...is a Woodstock-based, all-woman rock band that echoes Hendrix,

Zeppelin and the Stones. Their Capricorn CD "So Hi How Are You?" earned 3 ½ stars from Rolling Stone. In 15 years of grooving audiences across the U.S. they have opened for Bo Diddley, The Band, Jefferson Starship and countless other greats.

Carol Fox Prescott with Paul Helou

Distinguished actress, award-winning director, teacher, Carol has played featured and leading roles on Broadway (“Fiddler” with Zero Mostel, George M! with Mickey Rooney...) and nationally. Paul Helou is a world-class guitarist, songwriter and improv teacher.

The Queens

These four women – three of them sisters – have performed professionally

for several decades, surprising audiences with hard-hitting rock and roll.

Jonathan Kligler

Rabbi Kligler of the Woodstock Jewish Congregation is a charismatic

vocalist and guitarist with several CDs to his credit. Joined on this occasion by Steve Knight on bass.

Catskill Mountain Pipes and Drums

These state-of-the-art bagpipers and drummers convey the elegance and

poignance as well as the excitement of the grand celtic tradition.

Gus Mancini and his Sonic Soul Awe-Kestra

Gus is a phenomenon: classically trained musician and composer, master of improvisational jazz, distinguished musical educator, producer of CDs in the Indie top 10, co-producer of The Hawk Project. His Sonic Soul Awe-Kestra achieves a lush, multi-layered sound in its venturesome explorations.

Cecilia St. King

Audiences from Colorado to Japan have been moved by this singer-songwriter-guitarist’s impassioned message of peace and justice. Howard Dean’s campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination featured Cecilia performing her original songs in a half-dozen cities a day.

The Brite-Man Band

Home-grown in the Hudson Valley, this dynamic rock quartet features

original songs with a political message.

Steve Knight

Longtime traditional jazzman on piano and brass, composer of songs and

instrumental works, Steve appeared at Woodstock ’69 and in top rock venues on two continents as the keyboardist of Mountain. Currently a councilman in his home town of Woodstock.

The War in Iraq

Maurice spoke on the House floor on March 17 to oppose the Republican resolution celebrating the war in Iraq. The resolution listed reasons for going to war that are very different from the primary justification provided by the Bush Administration prior to the war. The resolution cites Saddam Hussein's 1998 use of chemical weapons, which resulted in the deaths of 5,000 Kurds. Maurice pointed out that many of the president's advisors who supported the war had also continued to work in partnership with Iraq after the gassing took place. He also took issue with the resolution's assertion that the world is a safer place as a result of the war. (view speech)

should read 1988 gassing of Kurds, not 1998.

It was Reagan who knew of an approved Iraq's use of chemical weapons...

Worked in a local concrete plant... served in the military ... supported Howard Dean and medical marijuania... Maurice Hinchey is a national treasure.

I love the Green party, but I think that the big MO deserves their support as well, imo.

28. Hinchey on Bush and the CIA case
Hinchey on Bush: It's disgraceful

President Bush's action to authorize the release of classified information is "an absolute disgrace to the institution of the Presidency," Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-Hurley, said yesterday.

"The heart and motive of this case is about the deliberate attempt at the highest levels of this administration to discredit those who were publicly revealing that the White House lied about its uranium claims leading up to the war," he said in a prepared statement. "If so, President Bush and other top members of his administration knowingly lied about uranium to the Congress, which is a crime. ... The heart of the CIA leak case cannot and must not be ignored."

Hinchey launches effort to uncover who halted DOJ investigation of NSA program

http://www.midhudsonnews.com/News/Hinchey_DOJ_NSA-12May06.htm

One day after the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Professional Responsibility informed Congressman Maurice Hinchey of Hurley that it had closed its probe of the Bush administration's warrantless domestic spy program because investigators were not granted the necessary security clearances, Hinchey led a group of House Democrats in calling on the OPR to reveal who stifled the investigation. Hinchey and his colleagues sent a letter Thursday to OPR Counsel H. Marshall Jarrett, seeking the identity of the agencies and individuals who denied security clearance to OPR investigators.
