Kansas City Star Demands Talent Pull Misleading Ads...
Talent is challenged on accuracy of ads

The Star demands that the senator correct or withdraw some spots.

WASHINGTON | Sen. Jim Talent’s campaign plans to review several of its recent TV ads to ensure that the sources of its criticisms of opponent Claire McCaskill are clear.

The Kansas City Star demanded Monday that Talent either pull the ads or correct them after a nonpartisan Web site that scrutinizes campaign advertising for accuracy said they were “misleading” and “deceive voters.”

FactCheck.org, a project sponsored by the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, said over the weekend that Talent in the ads “falsely attributes several unflattering quotes” about McCaskill to The Star.

The Web site said the ads make it appear as if the criticisms of McCaskill, the state auditor and Talent’s Democratic challenger, were from Star reporters or editorials. They actually were quotes from her “political opponents,” it said.

“We are formally requesting that the Talent campaign pull all ads that cite The Kansas City Star as the source for material that is not properly attributed,” Editorial Page Editor Miriam Pepper said in an e-mail to the Talent campaign. “The ads imply that these are statements from editorials or reporters. They are not.”
