(149 posts)Dogs stay downstairs and cats mostly stay upstairs. The cats do come downstairs sometimes to show the dogs who is boss. It really isn't fair to the dogs because they can't get upstairs to retaliate. They would eat all the cat food if they could.

(16,586 posts)I live in an HOA community 55+ so only one pet per household. I do see a couple of others walking 2 dogs n I know the guy down the street has more than one Maine Coon but Ruby is used to being here by herself n introducing her to a kitty now wouldnt be too easy, I think. If I ever win the lottery, Im gonna have the best no kill shelter open to all! Not crazy about reptiles so Ill have a good referral for them.

(681 posts)The cats raise hell in the house...but they are queens and kings of the dogs.
(PS. I don't like cats outside. The birds are not fond of them either..)

(215 posts)Before I retired 7 years ago, I I lived on 5 well fenced acres and had between 3 - 6 dogs and 2 - 4 cats. Three horses and a goat.

(24,219 posts)Winston - 12 yr old green-eyed, black and brown 15 lb tabby guy
Chessie - 12 yr old green eyed 8 lb tuxie girl
Fitz - 1 1/2 yr old 11 lb bluepoint Siamese boy
Charlotte - Fitz's 8 lb sealpoint sister
Winston has a great rescue story. Our sons were members of the Carthage College soccer team in Kenosha WI. In August of 2012, the soccer team was in San Antonio TX for a pre-season tournament, and they found Winston all by his lonesome one evening when heading back to their hotel after dinner - very small, and with a bleeding toe on his left back paw. They took him back to the hotel, planning to find a shelter to take him to. All the shelters were full, and they were told that if a kitten with an injury was brought in, it would be euthanized.
My sons have had cats since they were in utero, so there was no way that was an acceptable option. They passed the hat among team members and got enough money to get the kitten a ticket and flew him back to WI with the team. He stayed with our older son in an off campus house with 4 other team members and a 90 pound black lab. He became cat #5 for us when our son finished school and moved in with a friend who was allergic to cats.
Based on his weight of 20 oz, he was estimated to be about 4 weeks old at the time of his rescue. He's thrived and is a big sweetheart.
I think the big jump is from 2 cats to 3. After 3, it's like, "Hey, what's one more?"
