Enough Arizona senators vote in favor repealing Civil War-era abortion ban
Source: KPNX 12 News (Arizona)
PHOENIX The Arizona Senate has signed off on a bill to repeal an abortion ban dating back to the 19th century.
Two Republicans, T.J. Shope and Shawnna Bolick, sided with Democrats on Wednesday to deliver enough votes to pass House Bill 2677, which would repeal a law that would only allow abortion in circumstances that would save a woman's life.
While explaining her vote, Bolick described herself as pro-life and recalled personal pregnancy stories to make the point that "not every pregnancy is the same."
Republicans complained about how the bill was quickly fast-tracked through the legislative process after the Arizona Supreme Court recently decided that the 1864 abortion law could be reinstated.

(2,990 posts)I don't trust the hyper-conservative AZ legislature. It's dominated by religious conservatives, many from the Mormon church.

(11,249 posts)1) There is already a 15-week ban in place that will become law now that this one is repealed.
2) The governor is a Democrat and won't sign any more restrictions.
2) There will be a pro-abortion referendum on the ballot in November.
But,
3) Republicans are trying to introduce another competing referendum onto the ballot to try and dilute the support for this one.

(11,249 posts)Interesting that Justice Bolicks wife was one of the two Rs voting to overturn the law today.Especially since she was involved in the prayer meeting to preserve the 1864 law a few weeks ago

I think Mayes was requesting a 90-day stay of the 1864 law as well.
Mayes won by something like 260 votes. A great example of voting matters.
