Ted Cruz wants taxpayers to fund airport escorts for top officials like him

Source: daily kos

Thursday, March 28, 2024 at 8:30:06a CDT

Sen. Ted “Cancun” Cruz is closer to enacting an airport security amendment that would allow top federal officials like him to apply for a dedicated security escort at commercial airports. Cruz added the amendment to the Senate bill that would fund the Federal Aviation Administration through 2028, telling Politico back in February that there are “serious security threats facing public officials.”

The Texas senator was busted by a fellow traveler when jetting off to Cancun, Mexico, in February 2021, while a disastrous winter storm slammed into his home state. The criticism, from Democrats and Republicans alike, was so brutal that Cruz immediately returned home, apologizing and admitting it was a "mistake." That didn't stop him from seemingly blaming it on his young daughters, telling KTRK in an interview that fleeing the state was their idea and he was "trying to be a dad."

Cruz’s amendment covers a range of of political VIPs:

COVERED PERSON.—The term ‘covered person’ means a Federal judge, a Member of Congress, or a Cabinet Member who, as determined by an applicable Federal protective agency, currently is or previously has been the subject of a threat, as determined by such applicable Federal protective agency.

Cruz’s bill would require the Transportation Security Administration to “arrange for the provision of a security escort at a commercial service airport for a covered person,” as well as their family and staff members. .............................

Reminds me of the WBush Admin.......The Secret Service was overwhelmed with the massive numbers of W's staff that were grandiose enough to feel they were all strategically important enough to warrant having SS 24/7/365.......

The Secret Service went crazy trying to fill all the spots for years and years.......

Nothing is worse, than a little person, with a lot of power.........

You can only imagine what the SS and their expenses are to continually protect ol' lardass.......It has to be a small fortune......

...like someone taking his picture in an airport. Horror of all horrors. Photographer should have been lined up and shot, because otherwise, we're left with only one conclusion: Mr. Cruz has an inflated sense of uniqueness, an unwarranted sense of entitlement, he's easily offended, and unable to deal with opposing opinions; in effect, Teddy is a snowflake by his own definition.

He is abhorrent.

Ted Cruz wants lawmakers to get security escorts through America’s airports
Cruz told POLITICO that his amendment is about ensuring that political VIPs aren’t endangered as they pass through public spaces in airports.

By ORIANA PAWLYK

Viral photos of politicians jetting off to a tropical hideaway during a deadly cold wave might become a lot rarer under legislation being pushed by Sen. Ted Cruz.

The Texas Republican — infamously photographed by a gawker while en route to Cancún in 2021 — is proposing a bill amendment that would offer lawmakers a dedicated security escort at airports, along with expedited screening outside of public view. That could make it much less likely that the politicians’ comings and goings would become fodder for embarrassing news reports and late-night comedy mockery.

Ted Cruz Adds Personal Protection Amendment To FAA Reauthorization

I offer an insider’s view of the business of flight.

Senator Ted Cruz has attached an amendment to the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Bill. The amendment would provide free personal protection and Transportation Security Administration special handling for Members of Congress, Cabinet Members, and Federal Judges at U.S. commercial airports.

The amendment would require that any commercial U.S. airport the official and their family members or staff might travel through offer a security escort for the official and their entourage. It would also require the TSA to make special arrangements for private security screening of the officials and those accompanying them. The amendment calls on the TSA and FAA to calculate the costs of offering these additional protection services and to brief Congress on requirements for staffing and resources.
